The new Movie Player in SimpleumSafe 3.9

The new Movie Player in SimpleumSafe provides a custom interface for playing videos inside an open Safe, tailored to iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

The player is more than a visual update. It brings the most important features directly into the video preview, remembers selected playback options, and handles file changes, full-screen viewing, AirPlay, and locking or closing a Safe.

A clear interface for video previews

Three large controls take center stage: skip ten seconds backward, play or pause, and skip ten seconds forward. Below them, the timeline shows both the current position and the total duration. You can drag the slider to any point: a video that was playing continues afterward, while a paused video stays paused.

While a video is playing, the controls automatically fade out after a short period of inactivity. Tap the video area to bring them back. They remain visible when playback is paused, while you move the timeline slider, and while you use the playback options. When VoiceOver or Switch Control is active, the player does not automatically hide controls that can receive focus.

Starting with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26, the central controls use Apple’s Liquid Glass design. On older supported systems, a high-contrast design keeps the controls easy to see and use.

Playback speed, autoplay, and looping

The Playback Options menu lets you choose from the playback speeds offered by the system. It also contains two settings that are remembered beyond the video currently open:

• Autoplay: When enabled, the next video you open or select starts playing automatically. Autoplay is off by default. A video paused because you switched apps or Safes does not unexpectedly restart as a result.
• Repeat: Choose between Play once and Loop. When looping is enabled, the video automatically starts again from the beginning when it ends. By default, a video plays once.

Both options are available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac and are saved in the respective app installation. Changing the repeat setting does not interrupt playback and preserves the position, volume, mute setting, and playback speed.

Audio tracks, subtitles, and volume

If a video contains multiple audio tracks, the player lists them in the menu. You can select a specific track or use Apple’s automatic selection. Subtitles and closed captions are also only offered when the video contains them. Depending on the media, the available choices include Automatic, Off, and the subtitle tracks included in the file.

For videos with sound, the new player provides volume controls and the option to mute or unmute. On iPhone and iPad, the volume control adjusts the system output. On Mac, it adjusts the player’s volume relative to the system volume.

AirPlay, full screen, and Picture in Picture

Use the integrated AirPlay icon to select a compatible receiver and play the video on a suitable screen. Pause, mute, and the other playback options remain available.

When you switch between the regular file preview and full screen, the Movie Player uses the same playback session. The video continues without restarting or losing its position. On Mac, full-screen mode fills the entire display, temporarily hiding the sidebar, file list, and toolbar.

The new Movie Player also supports Picture in Picture on Mac. Once you deliberately start it, the video stays visible in a floating window when SimpleumSafe moves to the background. Picture in Picture is not yet offered within file details on iPhone and iPad.

Safe behavior when navigating and locking

A video preview remains part of the open, unlocked Safe. SimpleumSafe therefore stops or pauses playback whenever this is needed to protect your data:

• Moving horizontally to the next or previous file pauses the current video.
• Switching to another video or preview type ends the previous playback so that sound does not continue in the background.
• Moving the app to the background pauses playback. A Picture in Picture session deliberately started on Mac is the only intended exception.
• Locking or closing the Safe, or leaving the preview, releases the player, any active Picture in Picture session, and the temporary preview.
• Unlocking the Safe or returning to the app does not automatically restart a previously paused video.

SimpleumSafe uses only public Apple APIs for these features and does not introduce an additional third-party player library. Supported formats include MP4, MOV, and other formats that SimpleumSafe recognizes as video and that Apple’s AVFoundation can play on the device. Which codecs can actually be played therefore still depends on the operating system and the video.

Switching back to the previous Movie Player

You can reactivate the previous Apple system player at any time. In SimpleumSafe, open Settings > Labs and turn off New Movie Player. SimpleumSafe will use the previous player the next time you open a video preview.

Turn the switch back on to use the new Movie Player again from the next video preview onward.
