Turn off the Safari AutoFill categories you do not want Safari to offer in web forms. This is especially useful when other people can use your unlocked Mac user session. AutoFill is not inherently unsafe, however, and disabling every category trades convenience for a smaller chance of exposing stored form data in that session.
Change the AutoFill settings
Current macOS versions
- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari > Settings.
- Open AutoFill.
- Deselect the categories you do not want Safari to fill: contact information, user names and passwords, credit cards, or other forms.
On older macOS versions, choose Safari > Preferences > AutoFill instead.
What this setting does not do
- Turning off a category stops Safari from offering that category automatically; it does not necessarily delete information already stored in Contacts, Passwords, or Safari.
- Some password and payment-card fills can require Touch ID, depending on the Mac and its settings.
- This setting does not protect manually entered data, an unlocked user session, or data copied to the clipboard.
- Separate macOS user accounts and a promptly locked screen provide a stronger boundary than relying on browser preferences alone.
Also review how quickly your Mac starts the screen saver and requires authentication, and keep Safari’s fraudulent website warning enabled.
